The hallway bathroom was a nightmare. I wish so bad that I would have taken a before picture when we bought the house, but at the time I told myself that I never wanted to remember what it looked like. Not dramatic at all...
Anyway, this house was built in the 60's, so for whatever reason they were designed to be "powder rooms." This means that there is one door to get into the bathroom where a sink and mirror would be... and then you walk through another door to use the toilet or shower. This would be a great idea if the spaces were bigger, but now it just feels weird.
Instead of knocking out the wall and making it a bigger bathroom, we just purchased two, white, 6-panel doors. We're on a tight budget around here.
The bulk of this project went to hired help. When we bought this house, the bathtub was baby blue, the toilet was also a matching baby blue, and in the powder room... you guessed it....had a baby blue sink. It's also important to mention that the lady who owned this house was a smoker... and all of the tile was orange!!
After getting a few estimates and weighing our options, we decided to hire a plumber and replace the toilet and sink. We painted the bathroom a heavy beige (same color as the dining room and foyer), added white base moulding, white 6-panel doors, a new shower head, mirror, and some accessories.
As far as the tub and tile surround... well, that was half of our costs. Instead of hiring someone to remove the tub, replace the sub floor, tear out the dry wall, replace the dry wall, and replace the back splash... We just decided to have it all glazed white. It only took one day and there was no mess. The glazing lasts around 12 years, if it's cared for properly, and I hope to be moving on up by then anyway. :)
The theme of the bathroom is "beachy."

We had the tub guy glaze the little tile area by the sink, too... just so that everything would match. The total remodel was close to $1500 but I feel like we would get at least twice our return when we decide to sell.
Also worth mentioning... You will be surprised what you could sell during a remodel. We put the old vanity and the 42 year old blue toilet on craigslist... and they were picked up the same day!
I'll be back more often this week.... with recipes! :)
