When I was a kid, there wasn't a high chair banner for a first birthday, or themed-centered favors, or even fondant cake. The invitation came in the mail {but mostly by hand} on fill in the blank invites that did not coincide with the party, whatsoever {unless Lisa Frank counts, which it totally should}.
Or maybe that was just my house.
My parties growing up consisted of just telling friend's at school to come over on Sunday, playing Bozo's Grand Prize Game with old pots and pans, and my mom pocketing any birthday money that I received in cards because I "had to pay her back for my party."
This is probably why I go balls to the wall as a parent.
1. I love a good invitation... no fill in the blanks or facebook invites here.
2. I always serve lunch... even when I am cussing myself the day of the party because I forgot 7 things at the store.
3. My babies get homemade birthday cake... Fondant cake looks awesome, but I have to draw my budget line somewhere. And I love the idea that they know their mom will always make them a birthday cake from scratch.
Clearly not the best looking cakes from scratch...
Anyway, Olive's first birthday is in a few weeks. Girlfriend is always going to get the shit end of the stick with a December birthday. Her birthday is the same month as Christmas and our personal property taxes on our vehicles being due (damn you, Missouri). Haven on the other hand? He is in February and his birthday always falls on the same week we get our company bonus. Lucky turd.
With her party being a few weeks away, I gotta start planning.
Who am I kidding? It's already been planned since I found out she was a girl.
I think back over the summer, I commented on one of Kristen's post, like "Hey! I know it's Flag Day, but start thinking about Gingerbread Girl invites now." And I am only kind of kidding about that.
I've been wanting Kristen's Little Laws Prints to make Olive Gingerbread Girl invites for months. And when it finally didn't feel like a creepy time frame to ask {like Flag Day and Canadian Thanksgiving}, I took the plunge.
"I want it all!!!"
Invites on a nice card stock, matching thank you notes, a Happy Birthday banner for the food table, a highchair banner, cupcake toppers, and themed favor tags.
And look what arrived...
{not my real address or email}
I plan on having pre-made gingerbread houses for the kids to decorate with candy... and baking the cutest gingerbread girl cake for Olive. I have a gingerbread themed tree already, so I don't think I will buy much decor.
If you need any kind of party stationery, please talk to Kristen at Little Laws Prints. I just poorly described the vision in my head... and Bam! She delivered. I just prefer to go through real people... I always have a better experience and there is no way I would have received this kind of quality without paying out the whazoo.
And if you are in love with kid birthday parties, then please hop on over to Amy's blog today. She hosted a 1st birthday party for her son over the weekend... and it was, hands down, the greatest birthday party I have been to, ever.
Happy Tuesday!!

Love your Christmas Tree! I love all the stuff Kristen did! I'm almost set on Winter ONEderland but I want to incorporate ginger bread people. Like little stations where the kids could decorate ginger bread cookies, make a snowflake, color something (still working that one out in my head), crap like that!! I'm going to do my LGCs vlog today!!
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you did that tree already. Please. That's fucking awesome. And I love you. That is all.
ReplyDeleteI love the gingerbread theme! It ALMOST makes me wish one of my kids had a December birthday. Ha! I think it's so sweet that you make cakes for your kids birthdays. I really wanted to do one for my boys birthday party but I got scared! The Mr. Potato Head cake is adorable!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I'm sure you guys will have a great time! And...please tell me you were just kidding about your mama pocketing your bday cash?
ReplyDeleteI want to come to Olive's party! Birthday parties are the reason I wanted kids. Ha! I agree about invitations and serving a meal. If people are bringing my child a gift and celebrating with us, it's a courtesy that I feed them. A friend of mine had birthday parties for her kids and only served cake and ice cream. She even wrote that on the invitation. I understand that money is tight, however, you are expecting me to bring a gift so please put out a bowl of pretzels or something!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your cakes! I made Kendall's 1st birthday cakes and was kind of sad when I bought store bought cupcakes this year!
My daughter will turn one on December 10th and I am terrified she will get the shit end of the stick her entire life. I can hear it now "This present is for your birthday AND Christmas!" Cheap bastards.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with serving a meal and an old fashioned invitation. Love the ginger bread theme!! I can't wait to see a pic of Olive in her Christmas Sweater! lol She's too precious!
ReplyDeleteAdditionaly, your cakes are the shiz nit. Nick wants a Mr. Potatoe head for his birthday now LOL
Aww I love your cakes!! Very cute! Gingerbread theme is adorable as well! I love a good party too, and I may go over the top just a little!! She will have the cutest party!! Drew's bday is St. Patrick's Day, and I'm thinking of doing a St. Patrick's Day theme for his first birthday...but I'm not sure if that's corny or not?? Any thoughts?
ReplyDeletei love the gingerbread idea and can't wait to see everything come together!!! Kadyn's first birthday is Nov. 10th and so we are in full swing over here with everything PUMPKIN and FALLAPALOOZA!!!!!!! Damn children - see what they do to us - crazy mom's :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute and I am glad that your Gingerbread tree gets to play double duty this year!
ReplyDeleteAw I can't believe she's going to be one! I bet it sucks having a December birthday! My bff is due Christmas eve so I bet it isn't as bad as that! Dang Missouri taxes!
ReplyDeleteAlso LOVE LOVE LOVE your party planning plans! I will TOTALLY do the same thing for out feature peanuts!
And your tree looks amazeballs!! LOVE Gingerbread men! :)
Your homemade cakes are adorable! I love the robot. The Gingerbread man idea is genius. What a great way to celebrate a little girl's birthday in December and it cracks me up that you already have a gingerbread man tree.
ReplyDeleteI had completely forgotten about personal property taxes due in December. Damn it!
What a great idea for a December birthday. Reagan's birthday is Dec. 29th and the poor thing always gets the shitty end of the stick. She always asks for a sleepover but it's almost impossible with everyone going out of town, etc. I told her that when she gets older, we may have to celebrate 1/2 birthdays in June.
ReplyDeleteConfession: my son got fill in the blank invites for his first bday. So lame, I KNOW! But we were on a budget. It was still a really cute party even though the cake wasnt homemade and I ordered pizza :) I would love to have a pinterest perfect party for my kids every year. But money doesnt grow on trees :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a fabulous Birthday Party idea. I really really love it. I know those dang taxes... I love the homemade cakes - I usually make some type of cupcakes. I did monkey one's for Elle's 2nd birthday and they were cute..
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to hit up Kristen for my summer babies birthdays. SO cute.
Lisa Frank TOTALLY counts as a theme! Sad fact: Kids today have no idea who Lisa Frank is. I asked the 12-year-olds I teach on Wednesday if they knew who she is and they guessed that she's a politician. UM, hello? She made killer whales cute, people!
ReplyDeleteBTW, Olive is totally lucky to have a mom like you looking out for her on her birthday! I always feel so bad for December babies!
Glad I'm not the only one that goes a little nutso over birthday parties! Although, I do admit to occasionally pocketing birthday money/gift cards. The way I see it, my offspring TOTALLY owe me for birthing them! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Lisa Frank! Can we please bring that back in style? Its "vintage" and thats cool- right? Love those little invites. Glad you told me its not your address cause I was like you live on Main St in St Charles? AWEEESOME! Can you get me a great parking spot during the Christmas parade? or something crazy like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're going to make it special for her. My poor husband got the shaft every year on his bday b/c he has a Dec 22 date. His grandma's would both give him the same shitty gifts they gave everyone else for xmas and say it was also his bday gift, so in reality he didn't get a bday gift b/c it wasn't anything more or bigger than the others. Boo, hiss!!! I get crabby about them when I think of that. Who does that to a kid? I try to make up for it now and make his day extra special.
ReplyDeleteHolly, Olive's party is going to be so cute! I can't wait! Haven's parties have all been adorable. Thanks so much for mentioning me in your post. I'm so glad you guys were able to come to Jackson's party and I'm glad you had fun.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog!!! If you get a chance check mine out and help a virgin blogger :) Thanks love!
ReplyDeleteYay! This is so exciting! I was talking with her about paper goods too but then wandered into the craft store yesterday and for some reason got a wild hair up my ass and decided I'm gonna try and be all crafty and make stuff myself. Yikes, hold me now! Anyway, Olive Betty's loot is super cute and I can't wait to see her cake! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh heck yeah, parties are soooooo much better now, although I miss Lisa Frank :) I love your idea for Olive's bday!! Unique and cute! I, ok my Mom, spends wayyyyy to much money on Madison's party. She's like crazy obsessed with themes and crafting so I let her. I pay for the huge ass bounce house and she pays for the 100 dollar cakes.
ReplyDeleteI am the same way about birthday parties for my kids! When I was young I barely got a Birthday cake since my birthday is 3 days after Christmas! (I feel for Olive having a December birthday).
ReplyDeleteYour theme for her party is adorable! Can I share her party! LOL! I am jealous!
P.S. Loved your vlog! Maybe I will try that at some point. I am hair stupid but maybe it would work if I watch it over and over!
100% agree! We got screwed with birthday parties back then! Now it's the bigger the better and nothing is off limits! I make my own birthday cakes for my boys too and I will till their 70 years old! My favorite invite that I've ever gotten from a parent was hand written on a white piece of computer paper - keeping it classy!!
ReplyDeleteI love your theme...if my daughter was born in December I would totally steal your idea (in the most flattering way possible)
ReplyDeleteI totally know how you feel, I just had my daughter's 1st birthday party Saturday. I am still recovering...but it was crazy fun to plan
And I was the crazy mom who bought her 1st year birthday tutu from gymboree when I found out she was a girl...
It's so funny reading this because I've always said I wish I was a kid now, for the fun themed parties alone. I remember having my birthday parties at McDonalds or the Skating rink with a Walmart cake. One particular McDonalds party included a game of hide the plastic spoon. I'm not even kidding. Their was a "birthday rep" from McDonalds that led the party and made the kids hide their eyes while she hid the plastic spoon. Isn't that a barrel of fun? Not.
ReplyDeleteI bet Olive's party will be adorable! I saw an idea on Pinterest for decorating those triangular ice cream cones (just the cone of course) with icing and candy, like Christmas trees. That may be a little easier and less stressful than putting together tons of gingerbread houses! My husband and I tried making one last year and um..yeah, they don't turn out white the same as the one on the box!

ReplyDeleteAn example of the Christmas tree cone :)
I'm going through the same exciting, stressful planning myself with Lucy's 1st birthday picnic & Bella's Winter Wonderland just 6 weeks later...Christmas 10 days later!!
ReplyDeleteI love the Gingerbread theme! Cute idea :)
ReplyDeleteYou are Mother of the Year! I am a bad birthday mom. I email people the details, and the kids get either a Costco or Wal-Mart cake.
ReplyDeleteCute theme idea! Olive will love it! Can't wait to see pictures. BG is having a puppy themed birthday party because she flips out in excitement every time she sees a dog. Which is hilarious because my husband and I don't really like dogs much. The color will be lavender, of course, for me :) I went overboard on pretty invitations, a banner, cupcake toppers and a smashcake topper. Oh well! We love pretty things, what can we say? Sorry husbands!
ReplyDeleteThe invitations are adorable!! I started planning Royce's birthday about 4 months in advance!! (Yes! I got your crazy and raise you a totally nuts!)
ReplyDeletePinterest was my god, but alas, money was not my friend! So I had to cut some stuff out, but we had fun and there were mustaches everywhere!
Not to mention, I was stressed as hell! But they're so much fun! I can't wait to see pics from Olive Betty's party in the next few months!
Whoa! You made those cakes?! Pretty damn good!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Heather! Please email me when you get a chance, I have a question about your blog! LifesABanquet1(at)gmail.com
