Resolutions and an Instagram Challenge

I am the Queen of Resolutions. Usually the first of the month or the following Monday, I am going to start eating better. We all start on Monday's, right? I will gain 3 pounds over the weekend, acting like it will be my last taste of fast food for a month, only to give up on my diet by Monday at lunch when all of my co-workers want to go to Mexican.

But this year, I have a few different resolutions I am making and I will have a post for each one and will hopefully keep myself accountable here.

Run a marathon

I ran four half marathons in 2013, along with some 5k's, a 10k, and a few 5 milers. But I am ready to blow Chris's mind and lose my last two toenails. Since the St. Jude marathon was cancelled, this has been hanging over my head like the little voice who tells me to buy Oatmeal Creme Pies at the grocery store. After seeing Brandi and Melanie finish their marathons in the last month, I gotta keep up with the Jones's! Just don't sign me up for a swimsuit competition... unless the competition is the best one piece with old-lady skirt combo... because me and my varicose veins will bring home first place.

Get My Mon-nay Straight

Y'all. Do you like how I am saying y'all now? I am from central Illinois where we usually just refer to everyone as "you's guys," but y'all is the new buzz word and I am about to wear the shit out of it. Ok, back to my second goal. Either start saving more money or find a bank-robbing partner. Because I have champagne taste on a Keystone Lt budget.

We poured every dollar of our savings getting into our dream home and now we are back to living like college students. Although, when I was a college student I remember going out drinking every night thanks to those student loans I am paying the devil on interest for now. Also, we were so used to a small rent payment on our 2 bedroom little shoe box, that we were able to go here and there and buy what we want. We can't afford to do that anymore. And while we have retirement accounts, 529 plans for for the kids, and life insurance policies... I am embarrassed of what little we don't have saved. I am about to get all Suze Orman up in my house. Someone find me some big gold earrings!

If you are in the same poor-man's raft, you should check out my friend Nina's blog HERE. She has a huge following on pinterest thanks to her budgeting templates she has created and for the savy ways she saves a buck. She has some great tips for how she plans out her budget and organizes her bills. I also love Nina's blog because she has the best variety of posts of anyone I know. In addition to all of her budgeting how-to's, she also has an impressive weight loss section, where she has documented her 50 POUND WEIGHT LOSS. And she is cheesy. And funny. And that person you want at 'cho party. Please check out her blog HERE!

Stop Yo-yo'ing

For the last ten years, I have been gaining and losing the same 15 pounds over and over. I have every size pants in my closet from 6's- 12's. My biggest problem, besides my love affair with fast food, is that I only workout when I want to lose weight. I don't go to the gym just to feel good. And if I go to the gym and watch more than Wheel of Fortune on the treadmill, then I expect to lose 5 pounds in my sleep... otherwise I give up. I need to commit and hold myself accountable the way I did after I had Olive.

I really thought that the marathon training would turn me into a Victoria's Secret model, but thee did  not happeeeene. I want to lose 15 pounds by summer. And I will turn into the most annoying workout person that instagram has ever seen.

Cuss-out Jillian for the Next 30 Days

For the month of January, my friends Melanie, Jenn, Kimmy, and ma-wah are hosting a Jillian Michael's challenge for instagram only. To help us kick off the new year and the beer-bloat, we are doing the "Jillian in January Challenge." All you have to do to join is pick your favorite Jillian DVD. I like her DVD's because they are only about $9 a Target and they are short enough to do before/after work and actually provide results. You can check out my Shred results HERE.

Starting this Thursday, the 2nd, we are doing a 30 day challenge. If you want to join in on the fun {and accountability}, just take your before pictures and measurements. You do NOT share these with us until you are done with the challenge if you want to compete for the prize. Use the hash tag #jmdvdchallenge for your chance to win a prize pack.

1st place gets $150 cash money. Each of us will pick one person with the best before and after pictures. We will then post those images on our instagram feeds. The person with the most LIKES gets the money.

There is also a prize for "A" for Effort. The person who consistently posts their daily Jillian workouts and keeps other motivated will win a Ruffles of Love tank of their choice.

The great thing about the challenge, is that it provides two make-up days for those who can't do the DVD 30 days in a row. It also ends on Sunday, February 2nd, the day of the Super Bowl... so we can all shovel our faces with food that night.

Say NO, More

I am the whore of People-Pleasers. And in 2014, Big Holly is going to start saying {hell} no. I don't want to. I don't feel like it. I will not care. The Lumiday does help with my anxiety with this, but I still do things that make me unhappy or are not worth my time because I am a helper... and I like to make people happy, even if I am miserable the whole time. Not in 2014. Selfish me needs a year to myself.

What are your resolutions for 2014?
Wanna join our Jillian Michaels challenge?

  1. oh girl I'm SO with you on the money one. While many believe that owning a business means money, it actually means more work and less money. I just found this budgeting software called You Need A Budget (YNAB for short) and I'm in love with it so far. I even watched the webinars. Here's to saying good by to debt and NO to those damn red sticker deals at target!

  2. Love your resolutions Holly! I am so on board with the money thing and am working hard on that too... by starting with no-spend January! It's definitely going to be tough but I'm so ready to make some changes... I NEED to make some changes! Can't wait to read all about your progress!

  3. I 'want' to do the Jillian thing with ya'll (See how I put that in there?), but it scares the shit out of me. I've had the dvd for a good year now, and haven't even put it in the player. But I have street cred since I have it, right? No?

  4. I am on board with all these resolutions except the marathon. My goal is a half this year. You should road trip to Nashville to run the full while I get in my first half. Also why is the IG hashtag not #dojillianinjanuary? Lol

  5. These are great (and achievable!) resolutions! Best of luck to you! I may have to join in on the Jillian challenge. Her videos kick my butt, so 30 days straight may kill me...or may finally help me drop some weight and tone up!

  6. Find a Dave Ramsey seminar in your area and you will want to start selling your sh*t to get out of debt! But I'm with you I can still do better. I think I'll just copy your resolutions and make them my own. Because they all sound like the stuff that's been bouncing around in my head!

  7. I also have struggled with losing and gaining the same 15 pounds over and over again. I want this to be the year that I lose it and keep it off. We can do it!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I am totally in on the Jillian challenge! I just got her Yoga DVD and I want to do the Shred all the way through again! :)

  9. I'm glad that you are going to conquer the marathon and it will no longer be hanging over your head. I have done a few 5ks and a 5 mile and I am going to do a half this year. Money is another one of my resolutions. I suck bad at it so I am going to do the 52 week money challenge. Look it up on Pinterest...it's easy.

  10. I may have to join this challenge. I may also annoy the hell out of my friends and family with the Jillian hashtags but so be it.

I need to focus more on money saving/budgeting goals myself.

  11. HOOORAAAYYYYY we are on the same page with 3 of 5 goals: Marathon, Shred and getting our money right. Woop woop. I totally printed all of Nina's templates for muh bill book and hope to make tons of progress this year. And who knows, maybe I will actually finish all 30 days of the shred this time? :)

  12. I'm IN for Jill challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Yes I want to join the challenge! I bought a DVD player last week for the specific purpose of starting Jillian (tonight!) I need some serious motivation right now since I am busting out of my fat girl pants :)

I have a couple other "resolutions" - although I don't typically like to think of Jan 1 is the end-all for my bad habits, but definitely some things I want to be more aware of and change. Like I need to think before I speak (aka get a filter) and stop sneak-eating junk food from the gas station.

    Happy New Year, Holly!

  14. Three words Holly: you nailed it.
My similar goals #1- except I am just going to shoot for a half-marathon…this would be huge at this point considering I am doing my first 5k on New Year’s Day. I have totally been sucked into the running thing….I do want to see just what I can do (really I just want to finish races and drink, ‘cause that’s what all the cool kids do)
#2- Need to do some work in this area too…but so unmotivated…I tend to live by the anti- Dave Ramsey rules…”It’s just money, I’ll make more!” & “Why save? You can’t take it with you! Terrible. Need to be a grown up..bleh.
#3- Umm would actually love to yo-yo…I have been stuck at 50 to 60 lbs over my goal weight since my baby was born…that was 6 years ago. I can maintain like a boss! I need to get in a consistent lifestyle of healthier eating and working out (I know…newsflash, right?)
#4- I will take your Jillian Challenge….and hate it the entire time…I have to do her DVD on mute…I do not like the way she talks to me…I don’t like confrontation and it always feels that way with her. Game ON! I am also going to throw in a 10 day cleanse somewhere in there to crank it up! that $150 would be good for my money habits(see above)
#5- I am going to say YES more…more to new experiences, more new people and friendships, more workouts .YES YES YES

  15. I'm going to google the heck out of 6 week 6 pack and possibly be in for that!

    ReplyDelete
  16. i am really happy to know that you cuss out jillian too. i hate that B. i have the shred and yoga dvd so i will probably start out on the shred. maybe ill judge my results by my capability to cuss her out because i know the first 10 days i won't even be able to breathe with the chunkamonk I've become. my skin is sagging to china and that needs to change!

love your last goal. do it for YOU holly!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I want to do the challenge but I am a big fat chicken. The only 2 things I stuck to last year were quitting smoking (which I am extremely proud of) and shoveling crap into my mouth instead of smoking. Which brought me an extra 20 lbs in the wrong direction which at this moment makes me want to cry big fat ugly tears. I have failed miserably at the fitness thing this past year. But.... I do own a never used copy of The Shred so maybe this is a sign. Do we really have to show our fat ass before pics on instagram to win??? I'll probably lose all my followers lol! You drive a hard bargain Holly!

  18. Some really awesome Resolutions here Miss Holly! I can't figure out Instagram...(I have a dinosaur of a phone so I have to use my iTouch..) So I won't be joining that one but I will be cheering all of you on! I will also be hoping for any tips you have on saying "NO" as I am terrible about saying it and always end up in trouble or stressed because of it! Hopefully I will be able to start saying "no" a lot more next year!

  19. That's bc all the cool bloggers are from Texas YA'LL.

  20. I kinda really want to do the Jillian challenge. And by really want to I mean I can't think of anything I'd LIKE to do less, but I really NEED to lose some damn weight. I haven't stepped on the scale since before Thanksgiving and I'm terrified to do it. But maybe 2014 is my year. I'm gonna try it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Love your resolutions! I've been practicing saying "no" without offering to explain myself lately. Liberating!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm definitely down for a JM challenge... although I could use the money, I'm pretty sure I have a better shot at the tank top. I've been told I have a positive attitude (I've also been told the exact opposite), and one year I even managed to get my ugly mug entered into a runway modeling gig for prom dresses at JCPenney. I'm 100% sure it was because I had a good attitude :)

  23. Saying no is my resolution this year. I took on way more than I can handle at the start of this school year & I am going to be pawning responsibilities on people like it's my job in 2014. I mean, what the hell was I thinking when I said I'd be an advisor for the quiz bowl team. No - not happening.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Can pregnant people do the challenge? haha... I would be the only one who was bigger in my after picture than my before...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Holly, I am just like you in the people-pleasing category. Saying no was one of my 2013 resolutions. I did better- not the best- and I still felt guilty after saying no. So that's something I want to work on too.

I'm so in for the 30 day shred challenge. I'm way excited. Thanks for letting me know. Jillian, prepare to hear every word in the book as I commit not to "phone it in." Taking my "befores" today!

    Happy New Year

  26. FINALLY, you're going to start blowing up my IG!! You hardly ever post and I love it when you do! I'm totally on board with the challenge because this chick right here needs to deliver my food baby, stat!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love me some Suzi Orman!!! She gets me so motivated and at the same time makes me feel like the biggest piece of crap for not having $100k in my savings! ha ha, love her! I've not checked him out yet but I hear the name Dave Ramsey all the time, another one to check out for tips/ideas if you're looking for some. One more thing, we eat out way too much. The only way I've found to nip that in the bud is to make a weekly menu, gives me less excuses for ordering in pizza when I have a plan already. :) Good luck!

  28. I am not a people pleaser at ALL, I just simply don't care. MFD is and one of his things in 2014 is dropping that like a bad habit.

Exercise is tops on my list. I can't promise all Jillian but I am going to whip this flab into shape and hopefully be well on my way before I have to take my lily white self to Mexico at the end of February.

I'm also kicking off the year with a spending freeze and doing a linkup on any flubs I have in January on February 4. I just spend close to $1k on Mexico tickets today so it's beyond time.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm in for the challenge- is there a sign up form???

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good for you to be selfish this coming new year! Sometimes it just doesn't pay to cater to people's {dumb} asses! I'm a people pleaser as well... however I've finally started taking my husband's advice the last couple years. He says "f 'em" about everyone. If only it were that easy! Hah! I'm with you on #2 with the moolah! Definitely going to check out Nina's budget templates! Thanks for sharing! Happy New Years!

  31. Your goals are very similar to mine! I have fallen way, way off track and find myself about to start on losing that same 15 that I lost and then gained back again and this will hold me accountable! NOT a fan of the idea of posting a before and after picture, but Mama needs beer money, so I will think about it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love you and I love "Y'ALL" .... great word to embrace. And I hear ya on going all Suze Orman (however you spell that). Living on one income for almost 2.5 years while I was staying at home full-time didn't allow for any saving (and I have a Target addiction, plus the whole expensive dog purchase and all). Anyway, clearly my poor buying decisions haven't helped. Ha! Next year (as in a day from today), we'll get our shit in gear! Deal?!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Boom! Love these! Until this year, I never actually made resolutions...why, you ask? Well, because I know that I am TERRIBLE at keeping them. So instead of making them, I just ignored them...well, not this year! I'm bound and determined to keep them! I am training for a marathon (my first!) and figured it was good motivation to keep me motivated along with a whole slew of other nonsense ;) Good luck to you my friend, you will rock it (and if someone gets in your way, just tell them NO!) Go girl!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Those look like awesome resolutions! I would totally do your marathon with you! I'm a little nervous about Jillian Michaels, but I am looking for something to add to my workout routine.

  35. Definitely not selfish to take a year to say no. You probably deserve the break!! =) Great goals for 2014...and seriously I literally LOL every time I read your blog! Love!

  36. Glad to hear you're embracing "y'all!" Haha! Wish I could join y'all for this challenge but I am getting over the flu (and yeah I had my shot) and it drained me to go to the store today. I don't see myself being able to start any kind of working out until next week. I also am going to start telling people no and not even worry with an explanation too. Great resolution! Finally...I am going to start blogging again. We've had so much crap going on in the past 6-7 months around here that I totally pushed it to the side and I miss my friends. P.S. I loved my Christmas card!

  37. I'm from Southern Wisconsin and I say y'all all the time. I have similar goals. Be better at saving and budgeting money, get back to running after my ankle surgery, possibly half marathon and get this weight thing in check. I'll be 30(gasp) in a year and I'd like to have the weight thing figured out.

  39. I have so many goals that are kind of realistic (stop eating gluten and meat again, start getting up before the kids, keep up with laundry) and some that are less realistic (stop buying so damn many clothes for the miniature humans living in my house, get our finances squared away, make some new friends who are local instead of living in my computer) but...we'll see.

I mean, I'm already off to an awesome start. I've torn apart my house to rearrange furniture but it got exhausting so now everything is half finished and we have a basement full of crap we moved from our old house in June and haven't touched again (WHYDIDIMOVEITTHEN?!?!?!?) and junk food is delicious. Not gluten free. But delicious.

Resolutions are made to be broken, right?

  40. Jason begs me to sit down and work on a budget with him, but I keep resisting. I hate thinking about money so I just keep putting it off. (Seems to be how I deal with a lot of stuff, actually). Anyway, I'm up for the challenge because I definitely need to get my ass in gear. I haven't decided if I want to try and run another half marathon this year, but definitely get in some 5K's. Are you up for doing the Groundhog Run again?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow! Your resolutions are just like mine except I want to run a half! You are going to get your full this year I just know it! I'm on board for the JM challenge I'm doing a diet bet anyways so might as well do this :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love your resolutions!! :) One of mine is to run a full marathon as well. Do you have a full in mind? I would love to run a full marathon with you?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Amen! I lost 15 pounds and gained back 17 recently. I've started eating healthier again and just need to get back to my workouts. Luckily, I found one I like that I think I'll stick with even when I reach my goal because I like it that much and I don't really feel like I'm working out. As for Jillian, I should really decide if I'm joining you so I can do it tonight after work. I'm tempted to try one of her ones with weights but I'm also supposed to try out Crossfit and I worry I'll be too sore. I also need to get my money in check. Good luck with your resolutions!
